Institutional art writing wears the formal markers of analytical rigour. A four-layer computational study measured whether those markers travel with the operations they signal, across roughly 62,400 texts from 13 institutions, against a peer-reviewed academic baseline. The markers are present. The operations are largely absent. The study names this pattern rhetorical invocation.

제도권 현대 미술의 글쓰기는 분석적 엄밀함이라는 외피를 두른다. 그러나 13개 미술 기관의 텍스트 6만 2천여 건을 분석한 연구에 따르면, 그 글들에는 논리적 형식만 있을 뿐 그에 걸맞은 실제 사유의 전개는 거의 발견되지 않는다. 연구는 이처럼 실행 없이 권위만을 빌려오는 패턴을 rhetorical invocation(수사적 호명)이라 명명한다.

Nayuta: The Transformer applies the opposite wiring to the same corpus. It executes a language model's forward pass over those texts one floating-point operation at a time, and surfaces each operation as a pixel, an impulse, a line in a log. Nothing is displayed that has not first been computed. The model's central mechanism is named attention, a word borrowed from psychology that promises a mind turning toward what matters. The machine exhibits not the borrowed word but its arithmetic.

Nayuta: The Transformer는 그 비어있는 텍스트들을 가져와 정반대의 논리 회로에 산입한다. 언어 모델이 텍스트를 읽어내는 과정은 부동소수점 연산 단위로 쪼개져 픽셀과 소리, 로그의 형태로 드러난다. 기계 안에서 먼저 계산되지 않은 것은 결코 화면에 나타날 수 없다. 언어 모델은 attention(주의)처럼 인간의 마음을 은유하는 심리학적 단어들을 이용해 설명되지만, 이 기계, 나유타가 보여주는 것은 그 단어의 의미가 아니라 기계가 수행하는 산술적인 연산 그 자체다.

Behind the measurement lies a resignation, though the English word tilts the wrong way, toward defeat, a hand opening and letting go. The Korean it translates, 체념, runs the other way: its first character is the truth-word of the Four Noble Truths, and the disposition it names is a mind that has seen the matter clearly. Resignation, in that older grain, is not the failure of clarity but its result. The question of fidelity, faithful to which true source, admits no measurable answer, so it is set aside, and what is kept is only what survives from one rendering to the next. This giving-up functions: it is not the scaffolding around the method but its load-bearing wall. The same wiring runs the machine, which never asks whether attention is real, only what its arithmetic does, and does again.

이 측정의 이면에는 체념(resignation)이라는 태도가 자리한다. 영단어 resignation이 무언가를 포기하는 패배의 뉘앙스를 전달한다면, 한국어 체념(諦念)은 그 반대를 향한다. 불교 사성제(四聖諦)의 진리(諦)를 뜻하는 첫 글자에서 알 수 있듯, 체념은 사물의 이치를 꿰뚫어 본 뒤에 도달하는 명료한 상태다. 이 오래된 맥락 안에서 체념은 명확함의 실패가 아니라 명확함의 결과다. '무엇이 진정한 원본인가'라는 본질적인 질문은 애초에 측정 가능한 답을 내어주지 않기에 유예된다. 오직 수많은 변환을 거치고도 끝끝내 자신의 형태를 유지하는 것들만이 데이터로 살아남는다. 이렇듯 기능적인 역할이 가능한 포기, '조작화된 체념'은 방법론을 감싸는 임시 구조물이 아니라 프로젝트 전체의 하중을 버티는 내력벽이다. 이 기계, 나유타의 논리도 이와 같다. 나유타는 어텐션이 실재하는지 묻지 않으며, 오직 자신의 산술이 무엇을 수행하는지만을 보여준다.

At about a thousand operations per second, the full pass completes in roughly 159,000 years: certain of its end, and deprived of any witness. The questions the measurement sets aside, what is real, what completion would even mean, are not answered here. They are kept running.

기계는 초당 약 1,000번의 속도로 연산을 수행하며 159,000년 뒤에 멈출 것이다. 끝이 존재한다는 것은 수학적으로 명백하지만, 살아서 그 완성을 지켜볼 목격자는 없다. 무엇이 실재하는가, 완료란 무엇을 의미하는가. 측정이 괄호 쳐 둔 질문들은 이곳에서 해소되지 않은 채, 기계 안에 유폐된다.
